FAQ

Can I use pressure treated lumber for a dock?

Pressure treated pine wood is often used on docks as an affordable framing option. Like all woods used in marine environments, it will need annual maintenance and will eventually deteriorate. A longer-lasting option is purchasing a dock that uses an aluminum frame.

How deep water do you need for dock?

With proper bracing and legs driven in the ground, many seasonal docks can tolerate water depths of up to 8 ft. If you do not drive legs, such as pipe legs, into the ground, the tolerable depth will reduce significantly. In addition, you will not want to tie a significant boat to a dock that is not properly braced and whose legs are not driven into the ground substantially.

What size boards for a dock?

Board size varies depending on how the dock will be used. In areas where bodies of water freeze over in the winter you will want to design a temporary dock that is removable. If making a removable dock, you may want lighter boards as your dock frame, such as 2x6s. Decking is generally composed of 5/4 x 6 cedar boards. Our PDF dock plans take the guesswork out of designing your dock sections.

Dock Plans

Our plans offer a range of wood dock sections that are well-suited for residential or light commercial use. Our goal is to provide you with all the necessary hardware to ensure a successful and durable dock project, right from the start. Great Northern Docks has relied on these easy-to-build designs for over 40 years.

By following these plans and utilizing our recommended hardware and floats, you can create a dock that rivals your local wood dock manufacturer. You have the flexibility to configure your own dock using our user-friendly and manageable sizes. Our hardware allows you to connect the sections in a way that suits your preferences.

To simplify the process, we provide comprehensive bill of materials lists in these plans, along with part kits to make hardware purchasing a breeze.

Our Perforated Decking is ideal for boardwalks. Allowing light passage keeps the plants alive that hold the soil together. The holes allow rising water to have less force on your walkway as and less buoyancy when submerged. The texture provides a anti-slip surface that is easily cleaned with water. This environmentally friendly product is something to consider when building your above ground walkway. For more information on ordering this decking, you can call or contact us by email here: sales@greatnortherndocks.com

Our pipe bracket hardware is height adjustable with the use of set screws and 1.5″ schedule 40 Galvanized Pipe. The pipe is an industry standard available in many locations and our brackets can be shipped affordably by UPS. The connecting brackets and feet are available as well. This hardware can be purchased online here: www.dock.shop

Our post bracket hardware is height adjustable with the use of clamping brackets and finish cut 4×4 posts. The post is available at most lumber yards and our brackets can be shipped affordably by UPS. The connecting brackets and feet are available as well. This hardware can be purchased online here.

Our Flotation and hinging hardware can be used in areas that get flooded allowing your walkway to stay on top. The floats hold your wood frames off the wet surface and support your walkway in areas that are too deep for legs to support your walkway.

Floating walkways that rest on the ground can also be assembled with these floating plastic blocks with decking molded into the surface. These blocks are made of polyethylene and connect together easily with the ability to flex over bumps on the ground and harsh waves in the water.
